Stubble Jumpers

Edmonton Ultimate's Hat Tournament 2010

Father’s Day Weekend – June 19 & 20, 2010

Stubble Jumpers is Edmonton’s best kept secret (perhaps too well kept). This is an awesome weekend filled with fun, excitement and intrigue. For those unaware, a hat tournament starts with signup as an individual or with a (note: singular) buddy. Teams are then selected fairly randomly but evened out in terms of skill. You could say… they’re drawn out of a hat. The wonderful part about this format is you get to meet a whole plethora of people that you might not have played with before.

This event is for players of all skill levels. We’ve had everything from complete beginners all the way up to the seasoned veterans.

The tournament runs June 19-20, 2010. Meet up at 9:30 AM the Druids Rugby club to meet team and get started. There will be a party on Saturday June 19 – dinner will be served between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM, with the dance and festivities starting up shortly after that.

FAQ

Q: What do I get for my moola?
A: Your registration fee includes:

  • Two awesome days of Frisbee playing tournament goodness
  • FREE field food
  • Dinner Saturday night
  • An awesome party with a dance

Q: I’m from out of town. Where can I stay?
A: There’s free camping at the Druid’s fields. Washrooms and showers are available. Edmonton’s usually pretty warm come June, so sleeping under the stars is a fun (and more importantly, cheap =) option.

Q: I’m a COMPLETE beginner, or I just started playing this year. I’m really worried I’m not good enough to play.
A: Fear not! The tournament is for all skill levels, and teams are evened out by stanines. If you’re new, there’s probably somebody on one of the other teams who’s exactly your skill level. If you’re new to the sport, this is a fantastic way to learn more about it (veterens are usually very happy to coach), and also meet some other players.

The focus of the tournament is FUN! If you’re still concerned, find a friend who’s even newer at Ultimate and get them to sign up too. That way you experience it together (or have them put on a different team so they can boost your ego – your call).

Q: What should I bring to the tournament?
A: Bring a light shirt (i.e. – white) and a dark colored shirt. A water bottle, sun screen, bug spray, cleats (if you have them) and a yearning for fun are also a good idea. There’s field food at the tournament, but you may wish to supplement with your own snacks and drinks.

Q: I heard there was a theme at last year’s dance… and it was awesome. What’s the theme this year?
A: The theme this year is superheroes (and supervillans). As an incentive for dressing up, those in costume will be gifted a bonus drink ticket at the party!

Q: I don’t have a team. Can I still sign up?
A: Actually, sign up is either individual or in pairs, so no problem! You’re more than welcome to have your entire league team attend, but you may not all be playing on the same team. This lets you meet some new people, and get back at your teammates for that last night of post game beers that went too far. You know which one we’re talking about.

Q: I still have questions; who do I ask?
A: Stubble Jumper questions can be directed to your friendly tournament coordinator, Nelson. E-mail him at nelson-l@eupa.ca and he’ll do his very best to get back to you quickly. More isoteric questions such as those querying the meaning of the universe may require more time to answer (and will probably be answered 42).
