Seven EMUs (i.e., John G, Seb T, John R, DQ, D-Mac, Steve P, and Dave S) took the trek down to Daweena (Salt Lake City) this past weekend. The team joined up with some players from Missoula and Bozeman, Montana and one Regina dude to form the now legendary Missozoton.
Saturday was rough as the team had the challenge of starting off the day against Johnny Bravo (perennial UPA contenders) in addition to learning their teammates names. Missozoton shook off that loss to take the next two games against Sprawl from Phoenix and a SLC city master's team.
Saturday was cold and very windy. In typical Daweena fashion, Sunday was the complete opposite: sunny, warm, and calm. Missozoton took advantage and the hucks came out. In the quarters the team ground down B.U.S. The win was especially welcomed by the EMU players as BUS contained many players from the old arch-rival Warchild team.
That brought on a semi against Sack Lunch from Denver who went undefeated on Saturday. Sack Lunch took advantage of some Missozoton mis-communications to take the 1st half convincingly (8-4?). Missozoton stormed back in the second though to draw the score to 12-13. The hard cap horn blew and there was one more point to play. Unfortunately Missozoton missed a layout d by millimeters and ended up losing 14-12.
All in all, a sucessful weekend as it was the first time any Edmonton open players made the semis of this tourney. Said Dave Stelk, "The scenery's amazing, the competition is tough, the fields rock, and Mi Rancho rules. What else could you ask for?"
The tourney director will probably have results posted soon on the Daweena webiste: http://www.utah-ultimate.org/Daweena/
