Women's Ultimate
Hey Ladies! Did you know that countless studies have demonstrated positive effects for women playing on sports teams? Better health, strong sense of friendship, improved self confidence...the list goes on! Some very friendly females in EUPA are putting together a recreational team to attend two women's tournaments this summer. Hopefully this will work as a building year and then maybe next year there will be enough people to put together a competitive women's team. The two tourneys for this year are Flowerbowl (Vancouver, June 2/3) and Kaos (Kelowna, July 7/8). Instead of running separate women's practices in addition to all the other playing opportunities, the organizers are revamping the format of women's league this year so that beginners can learn the game and intermediate players can improve their skills. Monday nights are now called Women's Ultimate Challenge! Our awesome orgainzers hope to use Monday nights in lieu of practices and as a building block for getting more women interested in playing on a team. If interest is high, then women's practices will continue on Monday nights after the women's Ultimate challenge is over. You don't need to be uber-competitive. You just have to want to to work hard and have the desire to improve your Ultimate skills. If you think you may be interested in coming to either of those tournaments this summer, grab your friends and your overnight bags and please let Lindsey or Vanessa (below) know so that they can start to build a team list. There is an opportunity to get some funding from EUPA as a recreational touring team if they can get 12 Edmonton ladies to come to the tournaments. We'll be sending out more details about the women's team in late April. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Lindsey (burkesey@gmail.com) or Vanessa (trinichini@gmail.com).

We talking 'bout Practice with ARH
A Message from ARH (they are a competative team) Calling all Edmonton Ultimate Players! As some of you have already started talking about summer league, here are a few more opportunities for all of you looking to play ultimate this 2012 season. Various members from last year's coed team (ARH) in conjunction with the U of A Ultimate club have been busy organizing times for indoor practices and clinics while it is too cold/icy to play outside. People of ALL levels are welcome at practices/clinics/training. There are also plans in the works for OPEN competitive coed practices starting in the spring. The competitive coed team have also started mulling around a few ideas for the upcoming season. Read on below: Practices: Currently: Tuesday's 5-7pm. Phys Ed Main gym at the U of A. Geared towards uni students or anyone looking to be more active in the off season. Administration would want me to tell you that "technically" you need a One card (so bring an old one if you have one just in case). For more experienced players, feel free to help out with "coaching", but please respect those that are overseeing the practices so as to keep it running smoothly. Outdoor practices: As soon as it is warm enough. Twice a week at the start of the season - Saturdays (3 hours) and Wednesdays (2 hours). In July (after men's and women's league is done) a third practice will be added on Mondays (2 hours). Indoor Training: We are currently trying to figure out a good time to conduct this (light running, plyometrics and strengthening, stairs, speed-agility-quickness drills, throwing). Once per week starting as soon as we can find an appropriate venue. If anyone has a better facility suggestion, please RSVP. We are also excited to announce that both Seb and Jen Nicholls have expressed interest in coaching and running clinics when they are available. Thank you, Seb and Jen!! Coed Touring Team (ARH): Nothing concrete has been decided on in regards to the team organization, goals, etc. as the coed team has yet to have their first official meeting of the year. However, we would like to emphasize that practices are open to people of all levels who are interested in improving their knowledge of the game and fitness level, and with the goal of playing at a high level. Ultimately (no pun intended), as the season progresses, practices will be geared towards developing a roster for tournaments. Last year, a largely "new" (to Edmonton competitive coed ultimate) roster of players attended many tournaments, and overall, had a great season playing together! If you are interested in attending tournaments with ARH, more info will come later. To summarize, come out to practices! (And always bring a light and a dark shirt.) If you have any questions (until the coed team gets more organized), please direct them to arh.edmonton@gmail.com. We hope you are all well and we look forward to the 2012 season! ARH

New Downloadable Schedule
Hey ulti kids. I've added the ability to download your schedule via an icalendar format. Once you have this you can import it into your calendaring program of choice. You can either download all the teams you are signed up for or you can download an individual team schedule. Do do so click on the corresponding calendar icon in the "Your league infoz" panel on the home page.

I would love it if a few of you who are playing could try it out and let me know who it works for you. We'll call this a beta test before the summer season starts. For the rest of you, just wait till summer and this should help you easily import your schedule once it's up.
New Events Calendar
We now have a brand new shiny events calendar, listing all the events that we think you our members should be interested in.
If you know of an ultimate related event you can email board at eupa dot ca and we will review and add it to the calendar.

oard member Nelson Leong has been busy snapping pictures at various events. Take a look at the official EUPA smug mug foto library. If you ever forget you can find a link under the about us section here on the site
Quiz Question 10
Question: 10 Players cannot score by running in to the end zone with the disc. true/false?
Question: 9 A player may reach over top of another player to catch or block a disc, as long as they do not cause contact or impede the opposing player from reaching up. true/false?
(Reference:
XVI.H.3.b)(3): "The Principle of Verticality: All players have the right to enter the air space immediately above their torso to make a play on a thrown disc. If non-incidental contact occurs in the airspace immediately above a player before the outcome of the play is determined (e.g., before possession is gained or an incomplete pass is effected), it is a foul on the player entering the vertical space of the other player." If there is no contact, there is no foul.)

Question: 8 It is not a foul if there is contact affecting the play, but the defender was ‘going for the disc'. true/false?
(Reference: II.E: " Foul: Non-incidental contact between opposing players (see II.H for a definition of incidental contact). In general, the player initiating the contact has committed the foul." There is no exception for ‘going for the disc'.)

Question: 7 If a player catches the disc on the ground and then fakes a throw from their knees, they cannot stand up or it is a travel. true/false?
(Reference: XVI.J.2.a): "If a non-standing player loses contact with the pivot spot in order to stand up, it is not a travel, provided the new pivot is established at the same location.")

Quiz Question 5
The answer to question 4 is: "When a dispute arises over whether a receiver was in- or out-of bounds on a catch, or whether or not the disc touched the ground prior to the catch, it is automatically the receiver's call, true/false?"
(Reference:
XV.E: “If it is unclear whether a catch was made before the disc contacted the ground (grass is considered part of the ground), or whether a player’s first point of ground contact after catching the disc was in- or out-of-bounds or in or out of the end zone, the player with the best perspective makes the call.”
Best perspective is defined as:
II.A: “Best perspective: The most complete view available by a player that includes the relative positions of the disc, ground, players, and line markers involved in a play. On an unlined field, this may require sighting from one field marker to another.” )

Quiz Question 4
The answer to question 3 is: "A defender is running 5 meters behind a receiver when they are obstructed by another offensive player. Can they call pick?, true/false?"
(Reference: XVI.I.1.: "A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that causes a defensive player guarding (II.G) an offensive player to be obstructed by another player. Obstruction may result from contact with, or the need to avoid, the obstructing player." Also: II.G: "Guarding: A defender is guarding an offensive player when they are within three meters of that offensive player and are reacting to that offensive player." As the defender is more than 3 meters away, they are not considered ‘guarding' and the obstruction is by rule not a pick.)
Question: 4 When a dispute arises over whether a receiver was in- or out-of bounds on a catch, or whether or not the disc touched the ground prior to the catch, it is automatically the receiver's call, true/false?

(Reference: XVI.B: "A player called for an infraction may contest that call if that player believes the infraction did not occur.")
